The community arrived as indentured labourers in the sugar cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal in the 1860s and built something remarkable. Chatsworth, Phoenix, and Tongaat are the major Indian areas. The Grey Street Mosque and the Temple of Understanding are landmarks. Bunny chow was invented here. This isn't diaspora lite. This is a fully formed, distinct Indian culture.
