Irvine has become one of the most South Asian cities in Southern California, and UCI's Indian student body is a big part of why. The campus, the tech companies along the 405 corridor, and the broader Orange County professional scene have created a desi community that's young, educated, and growing. The parks are pristine, the schools are ranked, and the master planned communities are immaculate. What's missing is a social scene for single people that doesn't require driving to LA.
The format from New York: real contestants go on live dates on stage while a packed room watches and reacts. Afterward, the whole crowd mingles. Irvine was designed for families, not singles. This format gives OC's South Asian singles something the city planners forgot to include: a reason to be in the same room on the same night.
The thing about Irvine is that it's designed for families, not singles. Everything closes early, the nightlife is limited, and the town's layout makes spontaneous social interaction nearly impossible. You drive to a parking structure, walk to your destination, and drive home. No wonder the apps feel like the only option. This show gives Irvine's South Asian singles something the city planners forgot to include: a reason to be in the same room on the same night.

Irvine was master planned without a singles scene
Irvine's South Asian population boomed alongside UCI and the tech, biotech and finance campuses around the Spectrum, making it one of the most desi cities in Southern California. It is also a city engineered for order: great schools, safe streets, everything closes early and spontaneity was not in the plan. Single desis here live minutes from thousands of other single desis and meet none of them, because the city's social surfaces are all family parks and office campuses.
A live show is the unplanned thing Irvine needs, scheduled responsibly, with parking, because we know our audience.
What a Garam Masala night in Irvine looks like
A UCI grad student and a Spectrum product manager who have never met, on stage, going on a first date while Orange County's politest crowd discovers it has opinions and volume. Comedian hosts, live votes and a mixer where the boba run afterward is a structural part of the evening.

When is Garam Masala Dating coming to Irvine?
No date confirmed yet. We are gauging interest through the waitlist. UCI and the OC desi community make Irvine a strong candidate.
Will people come from LA?
Possibly. The show is designed for the OC community specifically, but Southern California attendees are always welcome.
Can I apply to be a contestant?
Yes. Apply now. Applications stay active for 12 months. Irvine applicants will be prioritized when we confirm a date.
Is there Indian speed dating in Irvine or Orange County?
OC gets the occasional desi mixer up toward Anaheim's Little India district, but Irvine itself, one of the most South Asian cities in Southern California, has nothing built for singles. We find that backwards and intend to fix it.
Where do South Asian singles in Irvine actually meet?
UCI circles, the tech and biotech campuses around the Spectrum, Diamond Jamboree adjacent food runs and community events designed for families. The city was master planned for everything except this.
Will LA people drive down?
Some will, the 405 permitting. But the point of an Irvine show is that OC's desi singles stop being a suburb of LA's scene and get their own room, their own cast and their own mixer.
