I run a live South Asian dating show. I have a stake in this ranking. I am going to try to be as honest as I can be about everything on this list, including my own show, because you deserve an actual assessment rather than a promotional piece. The criteria: does it produce real connections? Does it respect the cultural complexity of South Asian dating? Is it actually enjoyable? We count down from seventh place to the winner.
7. Shaadi.com events
Shaadi.com events tend to feel like what they are: community networking events organized by a matrimonial platform. Useful in the same way that a professional conference is useful. You might meet someone. You are unlikely to feel chemistry in that environment. The social architecture is optimized for evaluation rather than connection.
6. Married at First Sight (Lifetime)
An extreme format that produces extreme outcomes. The few South Asian contestants who have appeared on MAFS have had to navigate the additional complexity of cultural expectations in a format that was not designed for them. As entertainment it is compelling. As a model for how South Asian singles should meet, it is almost completely inapplicable.
5. Dil Mil community events
Dil Mil is the South Asian dating app and they have organized in-person events in major cities. The advantage is built-in cultural context. The disadvantage is variable quality and the sense that many events are afterthoughts to an app business model rather than the primary product. When the events are good, they are very good. When they are not, they feel like a networking happy hour that nobody at the office organized well.
4. Love Is Blind (Netflix)
Fascinating experiment. Genuinely entertaining television. Mostly irrelevant to South Asian dating specifically for the reasons detailed in the companion piece on this site. The pods remove the very variables that South Asian dating requires you to navigate. But as a study of how emotional connection develops without visual cues, it is genuinely interesting.
3. IRL speed dating events
Speed dating is underrated. It is awkward and fast and sometimes the format feels like a factory. But it puts real people in front of each other with no profile optimization and no algorithm. You either have something in the first five minutes or you do not. That is honest. And the compression of the format means you get through a lot of candidates in one evening, which is genuinely efficient.
2. Indian Matchmaking (Netflix)
This is the best thing that has happened to South Asian dating conversations in the last decade. Not because it is a great dating show. It is a documentary about the arranged marriage adjacent process, and it is a very good one. It opened conversations that were previously invisible to mainstream audiences and gave desi singles vocabulary for their experience.
The limitation is that it is produced. The narrative shape is artificial. And for all its honesty about the process, it cannot actually help you find a partner. It can only show you how other people tried. Read the full breakdown of what Indian Matchmaking gets right in 2026.
1. Garam Masala Dating (live, NYC)
Yes, first place goes to my own show, and I will tell you exactly why. The live format is the only one where real connection can happen in real time, in the same room, with actual social stakes. You are not editing yourself for a camera. You are not performing for a confessional. You are meeting a real person and the room is watching.
The mixer after the show means that the audience, not just the contestants, gets to date. This is unique. Every other format on this list creates a boundary between the entertainment and the actual meeting. Ours removes it. A significant number of couples who met at Garam Masala Dating met in the audience, not on stage. That is the point. Read more about what actually happens at the show.
The bottom line
The ranking comes down to one question: does the format create the conditions for genuine connection, or does it create the conditions for evaluation? Evaluation is what apps do. Connection requires shared experience, social warmth and some degree of real stakes. The formats at the top of this list produce those conditions.
If you want to try the live format, tickets to this week's show are at garammasaladating.com/tickets. Come to watch. Stay for the mixer. See what actually happens when South Asian singles are in the same room with the ice already broken.
