Toyota City's Desi Engineers Need a Night Out

Nagoya is the heart of Japan's automotive industry, and that industry has been quietly employing South Asian engineers for years. Toyota, Denso, Aisin, and the constellation of auto parts manufacturers in the Chubu region have brought in Indian engineers, particularly from the IITs and NITs, for roles in manufacturing, R&D, and quality. Nagoya University adds an academic population. The result is a desi community that's professional, well compensated, and socially isolated.

The format from New York: real contestants go on live dates on stage while the room watches and reacts. Afterward, the whole crowd mingles. Nagoya is Japan's third largest city and somehow manages to feel like a well kept secret. The desi community here is small but stable. People come for a two year assignment and end up staying for a decade. This show gives them the social event the city has never provided.

The social challenge for South Asians in Nagoya is acute. It's not Tokyo, where there's at least a critical mass of Indians. The community here is small enough that everyone genuinely knows everyone, and the dating options are either someone your colleague introduced you to or no one. A show that brings in people from across the Chubu region (Nagoya, Toyota City, Hamamatsu) creates a dating pool that doesn't exist day to day.

Sakae and Fushimi have the nightlife. The Indian restaurants around Nagoya Station are community landmarks. The Osu Kannon shopping district has energy. The city has everything except dedicated social programming for the desi singles who call it home.
