Stony Brook University has one of the highest percentages of South Asian students of any public university in the Northeast, and it's not even close. Walk through the engineering building or the health sciences center and you'll hear Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Gujarati in every hallway. Setauket and Port Jefferson round out the area, but the social life for desi singles on Long Island is almost entirely campus oriented.
The format from New York: real contestants go on dates in front of a live audience while the room watches and reacts. Afterward, everyone mingles. It's the night out that single South Asians on Long Island have been making the LIRR trip into Manhattan for. Now you won't have to.
The thing about Stony Brook is that everyone knows the South Asian community is huge here, but nobody has built anything specifically for the singles. The cultural orgs do their events. The families have their networks. But if you're 24 and single and living in Setauket, your options are the apps or driving into the city.
We're looking at bringing the show to Long Island. Stony Brook's campus and the surrounding area have the density to support it, and the demand from the student and young professional community is already showing up in our DMs. Get on the waitlist, or apply to be a contestant. You shouldn't have to take the LIRR every time you want to meet someone.
Long Island's desi singles commute past each other daily
Long Island holds two very different desi worlds. Stony Brook University runs one of the highest South Asian student percentages of any public university in the Northeast, a campus community with its own gravity out in Suffolk. Forty minutes west, Hicksville has become downstate's suburban Little India, with the families, groceries and banquet halls to prove it. The singles from both worlds share train cars into Manhattan every weekend to attend events that could have happened here.
An island show deletes the commute and merges the two worlds. That combination has been requested in our DMs more than almost any non-metro market.
What a Garam Masala night on Long Island looks like
A Stony Brook PhD and a Nassau physical therapist who have never met, on stage, going on a first date while a room full of people who all have LIRR horror stories reacts in real time. Then the mixer, where 'which branch do you live on' is finally a flirtation instead of a logistics question.

Questions About Stony Brook Shows
When is Garam Masala Dating coming to Long Island?
No date confirmed yet. We are gauging interest through the waitlist. Stony Brook's South Asian student community makes Long Island a strong candidate.
Will the show be on campus or off campus?
Venue TBD. We are evaluating spaces both on and near Stony Brook's campus. Waitlist members will be the first to know.
Can I apply to be a contestant?
Yes. Apply now. Applications stay active for 12 months. Long Island applicants will be prioritized when we confirm a date.
Is there Indian speed dating on Long Island?
Nassau gets the occasional community mixer, Suffolk gets nothing. For a region with Stony Brook's desi density plus Hicksville's, that is a remarkable gap, and it is the reason Long Island is on this map.
Where do South Asian singles on Long Island actually meet?
Stony Brook campus circles, Hicksville's desi commercial strip for errands and the LIRR into Penn for actual social life. The island has the population of a major metro and the singles infrastructure of a small town.
Would the show be near campus or closer to Nassau?
Waitlist zip codes decide. A campus-adjacent room guarantees the student crowd, a mid-island venue pulls Hicksville and the LIRR towns. Either way it beats the 10:47 back from Penn Station.
