From TU Wien to the Ringstrasse, Vienna Gets a Desi Dating Night

Vienna’s Indian community centres around the universities and the international organizations. TU Wien, the University of Vienna, and WU attract Indian students across engineering, science, and business. The UN Vienna offices and IAEA employ Indian professionals. It’s a compact community but it’s growing, and the social infrastructure for South Asian singles is essentially nonexistent.

Garam Masala Dating is the #1 live South Asian dating show and singles mixer from NYC. Real blind dates on stage, two hosts, a live audience, and a mixer. Vienna doesn’t have anything like this. The city has world class opera, but try finding a dating event for desi singles and you’ll come up empty.

Viennese dating culture is formal and indirect. People go on dates to coffee houses and spend two hours trying to figure out if the other person is interested. For South Asians navigating that layered on top of their own cultural dynamics, the clarity of a show where everyone is explicitly there to meet someone is a relief.

The Indian restaurants along the Naschmarkt area and in the 2nd district (Leopoldstadt) show there’s a community here. The students, the UN staff, the tech workers, and the established families all exist in Vienna but rarely in the same social space.
