Ghent's University Quarter Needs a Desi Night, Not Another Student Bar
Ghent has a growing South Asian community of students and professionals contributing to the city's international character

Ghent University is one of Belgium's top research universities, and its biotech, engineering, and agricultural science programmes attract Indian students and researchers. The VIB life sciences institute, Ghent's biotech cluster, and the port economy add professional South Asians to the mix. The city itself is a medieval gem that feels like a smaller, less touristy Bruges with better nightlife and a more alternative edge.
The format from New York: real contestants go on live dates on stage while the room watches and reacts. Afterward, the whole crowd mingles. In Ghent, this format is designed to concentrate the scattered desi community into one room for one night, creating connections that the apps and expat mixers never deliver.
The Overpoort student strip is Belgium's most famous nightlife street, and while it's primarily Belgian students getting wild on cheap beer, the international student community participates enthusiastically. The Indian students, however, often report feeling like outsiders in that scene. The cultural gap between Flemish student party culture and South Asian social norms is real. A show that creates a culturally grounded social event fills a need that the Overpoort simply can't.
Ghent sits between Brussels and Antwerp, and the Belgian rail network makes all three cities accessible within forty minutes. A show in Ghent draws from the Flemish corridor. The city's arts festival, the Gentse Feesten, proves it knows how to put on an event. The infrastructure and the audience appetite are both there.
