San Juan

San Juan Has Sun, Salsa, and a Surprising Desi Crowd

Puerto Rico's South Asian community is small but growing in ways that most people don't realize. The University of Puerto Rico's medical campus in San Juan has been attracting Indian and Pakistani medical students for decades, and many of them stay to practice on the island. Indian and Sri Lankan doctors are a fixture in hospitals across the metro area. More recently, the tax incentive programs (Acts 20, 22, and the newer Act 60) brought a wave of tech and finance professionals, some of them South Asian, relocating to Condado, Isla Verde, and the Santurce arts district.

The format from New York: real dates happen on stage, the audience votes, and a mixer wraps the evening. San Juan is a US territory with no visa requirements for mainland desi communities, and the UPR medical pipeline plus Act 60 tax incentives have quietly built a South Asian population that deserves a night out designed for them.

The desi community in San Juan is spread thin across the island and doesn't have a neighbourhood or a gathering spot the way cities like Houston or London do. Indian restaurants are sparse. Community events are rare. People connect through professional networks or not at all. A show that concentrates the scattered community into one room for one night creates something that doesn't exist here organically.

San Juan's nightlife and cultural scene is world class. La Placita de Santurce on a Thursday night, the galleries in Old San Juan, the Condado strip. This city knows how to go out. Adding a desi dating show to that mix is genuinely exciting because it's something this island has never seen.
