Athens has a South Asian community that most people don't know about. The Bangladeshi and Pakistani populations in the Omonia and Metaxourgeio neighbourhoods are established, running businesses and restaurants that serve the local immigrant community. Indian professionals are fewer but growing, particularly in the tech sector and at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), which attracts engineering students from across the world. The digital nomad wave has also brought South Asian remote workers to Athens, drawn by the visa programme and the cost of living.

The parallels are striking enough that the cultural adjustment in Athens can actually feel smoother than in, say, Helsinki or Stockholm.
