Teesside University has been one of the more affordable entry points for Indian international students in the North East, and Middlesbrough’s South Asian community has grown alongside it. The Linthorpe Road area has seen Indian and Pakistani restaurants and businesses multiply over the last few years. It’s a community that’s building in real time, and the social infrastructure hasn’t caught up yet.
The format from New York: real contestants go on live dates on stage while the room watches and reacts. Afterward, the whole crowd mingles. In Middlesbrough, where the desi community has depth but no dedicated singles programming, this format creates exactly the concentrated energy the city needs.
The North East can feel overlooked when it comes to cultural programming for South Asian audiences. Newcastle gets some attention, but Middlesbrough and the wider Teesside area are left to fend for themselves. The Pakistani community in areas like Gresham and North Ormesby has been here for decades, and the newer Indian student arrivals add a different energy. Putting both groups in the same room is what makes the show interesting.
Middlesbrough’s cost of living means the professionals who stay here have disposable income and time. They’re not burning three hours a day commuting like their London counterparts. What they lack is something worth going out for on a Friday night that speaks to their background. This show is that thing.

Teesside got the students and none of the scene
Teesside University's affordable international offer made Middlesbrough a genuine Indian student destination, and James Cook University Hospital adds medics to the mix. The North East's cultural programming never followed the students down the A19: Newcastle keeps the events, the Boro keeps the quiet and a community of thousands cycles through degrees with a social life measured in society meetings.
The overlooked-town chip on the shoulder is real fuel here. When the show that plays Manhattan books Middlesbrough, the room takes it personally in the best way.
What a Garam Masala night in the Boro looks like
A Teesside computing masters student and a James Cook doctor who have never met, on stage, going on a first date while the Tees Valley's entire desi scene reacts in one room with a parmo waiting after. Comedian hosts, live votes and a Linthorpe Road mixer that makes the case Newcastle never let Boro make.

Questions About Middlesbrough Shows
When is Garam Masala Dating coming to Middlesbrough?
No date confirmed yet. Middlesbrough is on our UK expansion radar. to be notified first.
Will the show be in English?
Yes. The show runs in English. Middlesbrough's South Asian community, including both the long-established Pakistani families in Gresham and the newer Indian students at Teesside University, is comfortable in English. The North East accent in the audience adds extra charm.
Can I apply to be a contestant?
Yes. Apply now. Applications stay active for 12 months. Middlesbrough applicants will be prioritized when we confirm a date.
Is there Asian speed dating in Middlesbrough?
Teesside has never had a desi singles event of any description. Teesside University's Indian intake built the audience; the North East's event deficit left the field empty. Empty fields are our favourite venues.
Where do South Asian singles in Middlesbrough actually meet?
Teesside University circles, James Cook hospital cohorts and Linthorpe Road's food spots. The pool is compact, the alternatives are an hour away in Newcastle and the demand shows up in our DMs regardless.
Would a Boro show pull from Durham and Darlington?
The whole Tees Valley plus Durham's students sits within forty minutes. One Boro room serves a region that has never once been served.
