Surrey is the Punjabi capital of Western Canada and that’s not an exaggeration. Newton, Whalley, Fleetwood, and the Payal Business Centre corridor form one of the densest South Asian communities outside of South Asia. Punjabi is the second most spoken language in the city. The Vaisakhi parade here is one of the largest in the world. If you’re looking for an audience, it’s literally right here.

The format from New York: singles go on dates on stage, comedians host, and the full room mingles before and after. In Surrey, where Punjabi is the second most spoken language and the Vaisakhi parade draws tens of thousands, the format gives the Newton and Fleetwood crowds a singles event that matches the scale of the community.

SFU Surrey has been growing its campus and attracting South Asian students who don’t want to commute up Burnaby Mountain. Kwantlen Polytechnic draws from the same pool. The student population layered on top of the multigenerational families creates a dating scene that’s complicated in a very specific way. Everyone’s mom knows everyone else’s mom, which makes casual dating feel like a public announcement.

The thing Surrey has lacked isn’t community. It’s events for young single people that aren’t weddings, family functions, or temple gatherings. The nightlife defaults to going into Vancouver proper, and the local social scene for twentysomethings is thin. This show fills a gap that’s been obvious for years.

Surrey built Punjabi Canada and deserves its own stage

Newton, Whalley and Fleetwood hold one of the largest Punjabi communities on the planet outside Punjab, with the banquet halls, sweet shops and gurdwaras to match. The community's social machinery is legendary and entirely marriage-adjacent: weddings are the events, the network is the app and single people navigate both with a mix of gratitude and dread. What Surrey has never had is a night where its singles meet each other on their own terms.

SFU Surrey's growing campus adds a student layer, and the young professionals filling the Central City towers add another. The room is ready. It has been ready for years.

What a Garam Masala night in Surrey looks like

Two Surrey singles who have never met, which in this community is a statistical event, on stage, going on a first date while a room that heckles with love reacts in two languages. Comedian hosts, live votes and a mixer that runs on the community's natural event energy without a single aunty in an operational role.

Yes. Surrey’s community is large enough for its own dedicated event. We are planning separate shows for Surrey and downtown Vancouver.

Can I apply to be a contestant?

Yes. Applications are open now. Apply early to be in the casting pool when Surrey dates are confirmed.

Is there Punjabi speed dating in Surrey?

Newton and Fleetwood community life, SFU Surrey's campus, banquet halls during wedding season and Vancouver's scene when they want anonymity. A Surrey-side show removes the bridge toll on your dating life.

Surrey gets its own night, its own cast and a venue on the right side of the Fraser. The Punjabi capital of Western Canada should not have to commute to date, and the waitlist agrees loudly.
