Aberdeen's South Asian community is established and growing, contributing to the city's multicultural identity

Aberdeen’s South Asian community has two distinct threads. University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University bring in Indian students, particularly for engineering, computing, and healthcare programs. And then there’s the oil and gas industry, which has attracted South Asian professionals for decades. The energy sector may be transitioning, but the people who built careers here have stayed, and their families are now part of the city’s fabric.
The format from New York: real contestants go on live dates on stage while the room watches and reacts. Afterward, the whole crowd mingles. In Aberdeen, where the desi community has depth but no dedicated singles programming, this format creates exactly the concentrated energy the city needs.
The Granite City has a reputation for being grey and reserved, but anyone who’s been to a night out on Belmont Street knows that reputation is only half true. Aberdeen goes out properly when it has a reason to. The comedy scene at the Lemon Tree and the university social culture show there’s appetite for live, interactive events. The live desi dating show gives the community a reason to show up that doesn’t exist right now.
Aberdeen’s geographic isolation from the Central Belt means you can’t just pop down to Edinburgh or Glasgow for a night out. It’s three hours to either city. The desi population here is self contained by necessity, which means a local event has outsized impact. Every person in the room matters because there are no other options within driving distance.
