Iowa State has a strong Indian graduate student community, especially in engineering and computer science. Ames is a small town built around a big university, and if you're South Asian and single here, your world can feel very small very fast. The same lab, the same apartment complex, the same Hy-Vee grocery run. Meeting new people outside your program takes effort, and the town doesn't offer much help.
The format from New York: real contestants go on live dates on stage while the audience watches and reacts. Afterward, the whole room mingles. It's the social event that small college towns need but never get. In Ames, where the nearest big city is two and a half hours away, an event like this becomes the most interesting night of the semester.
Ames is two and a half hours from any major city. That isolation can make dating feel impossible, but it also means that when something real comes to town, people actually show up. The ISU desi community is tight and enthusiastic. We think a show here would pack the room.
We're gauging interest. and you'll be the first to know when we announce a date. If you want to go on a live date on stage in front of your classmates, apply to be a contestant below. That's either incredibly brave or deeply unhinged, and honestly we can't tell the difference anymore.
Ames is the most isolated desi campus community we route for
Iowa State's engineering and agronomy programs quietly maintain a strong Indian graduate community in a town surrounded by two hours of fields in every direction. The isolation compounds the usual campus dating problems: circles are departmental, the app radius is agricultural and the nearest alternative scene is Des Moines, which has its own desi professionals and equally few occasions. Everyone within sixty miles is waiting for someone to build the night.
Captive geography makes legendary rooms. When the only event in a hundred miles happens, attendance is not a decision. It is a reflex.
What a Garam Masala night in Ames looks like
An ISU mechanical engineering PhD and a Des Moines actuary who have never met, on stage, going on a first date while central Iowa's entire desi scene shares one room for the first time ever. Comedian hosts, live votes and a mixer that becomes the origin story of every couple in the region for the next decade.

Questions About Ames Shows
When is Garam Masala Dating coming to Ames?
No date confirmed yet. We are gauging interest through the waitlist. ISU's desi community makes Ames a candidate.
Will people come from Des Moines or Iowa City?
Possibly. When shows come to small college towns, they draw from the broader region. That is part of the value.
Can I apply to be a contestant?
Yes. Apply now. Applications stay active for 12 months. Ames applicants will be prioritized when we confirm a date.
Is there Indian speed dating in Ames?
Ames has never had a desi singles event. Iowa State's Indian grad community socializes through department potlucks and cricket, which build friendships and precisely zero dates. We supply the missing format.
Where do Iowa State desi students actually meet?
Howe Hall, Parks Library, the same two apartment complexes and Welch Ave on brave nights. The pool is real and the visibility is zero, the classic isolated campus equation.
Would Des Moines desis drive up?
Thirty five minutes for the only desi singles night in Iowa? Des Moines' young professionals will be in the front row, and honestly they have been the louder half of the waitlist.
